Bitcoin – the world’s first decentralised cryptocurrency by Guinness World Records

Terms such as blockchain, digital assets, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and NFTs are all among the most publicly mentioned topics of the past few years.

The newly launched 2023 Guinness World Records book recognised Bitcoin as “the most valuable cryptocurrency,” with a market cap of $816.69 billion as of March 24, 2022. Furthermore, it also acknowledged Bitcoin as “the world’s first decentralised cryptocurrency”

The book explains that Bitcoin’s origins were back in 1992, within the online community dubbed ‘Cypherpunks’, made up of cryptography enthusiasts, libertarians and software developers.

“Bitcoin was developed as a solution to the challenge of regulating a digital currency without any centralized organisation, or ‘trusted third party’, to oversee transactions,” The Guinness World Records’ writes.

Biggest Bitcoin fraud in 2013

However, this isn’t the first Bitcoin mention in the book since, back in 2015, it referred to the largest Bitcoin fraud as well. The book said that by November 2013 the currency’s value had jumped to US$1,000 and that Bitcoin had already suffered losses from fraud.

“According to bitcointalk.org and a November 2013 report in the Washington Post, the worst loss was that of the Bitcoin Savings and Trust, which reportedly lost the equivalent of US$5.6 million by the time it was shut down by the US Securities and Exchange Commission in 2012”, it explained.

Largest crypto class by Binance

Recently, the biggest crypto exchange Binance also confirmed that it had achieved a Guinness World Record after being recognised for conducting the largest crypto class. According to the post, Binance held “the world’s largest cryptocurrency class at Blockchain Land 2022 in Monterrey—making it into the Guinness Book of World Records.”
